Springfield

Springfield is located in southeast Georgia in Effingham County.  It is approximately 25 miles northwest of downtown Savannah.  Adjoining Effingham County cities include Rincon and Guyton.  Springfield's modern structures blend seamlessly with historic landmarks, preserving the town's nostalgic charm. Amidst Victorian homes maintained by dedicated societies, vibrant businesses thrive, fostering a strong sense of community. Despite the city's evolution over the years, Springfield remains steadfast as "The Core of Effingham." Established in 1799, Springfield's roots trace back to its designation as the county seat by a state-appointed commission. Effingham County had shifted its seat thrice before the dawn of the 19th century, but with Springfield's emergence as the county's central hub, Effingham had at last discovered its "heart." One of the "gems" that endure is the site of the unique Town hall and the Old Jail. Following Greek Old-style structure, the Town hall was manufactured and planned by Savannah architect Hyman W. Witcover. As the county developed, this unique structure additionally evolved to house the numerous public and taxpayer-supported organizations needed to accommodate the county's evolving needs.
